Even though the source code of the game engine has been released to the public, the artwork, music, etc. was not made available for free. So, you need to buy Homeworld if you would like to play the full version.

Only the source code is freely available, not the game itself.

Full game is required, I think. Application of the 1.05 update is mandatory, and I don't think you can even update the demo to 1.05.
