Is it possible to turn off the internal speaker but still leave the jack on the back live so that i have my speakers working but not the front speaker?

I have managed to do this, MUTE the MacMini StartUp 'CLANG' but I have an external Iomega MiniMax HDD enclosure attached to my Mac Mini running MorphOS 3.1 on the MacMini, and I have installed MacOSX 10.4.11 onto the external HDD in the MiniMax.

This has allowed me to install the StartupSoundPref program to be installed onto the Mac OSX preferences, and allowed me to basically permanently MUTE the startup sound. So no more sudden 'bell like clangs' when the machine is switched on - silence is golden, until I switch on Jukebox or some other means of listening to audio which works fine. I suppose I could disconnect the MiniMax from the system, but I sometimes use the Mac OSX anyway so I'm keeping them together for the time being.

You could no doubt attach a USB HDD enclosure with Mac OSX on it, with this small Internal Speaker muting program utility on it, and run it yourself, and that way have a quiet startup with MorphOS like I do, but maybe someone else has found a better way of doing it than I have?

The Minimax also has a further 3 USB ports and a further 2 Firewire ports as these are built in to the MiniMax to be used on the MiniMax device, Firewire mainly for Mac OSX, but the additional USB ports are very handy.

I also have a Belkin Firewire + USB base unit, and a Belkin USB base unit (1 of each) that fit under the MacMini that has an additional 4 USB ports on the USB ONLY device, and a further 4 USB & 2 Firewire ports on the other Belkin device - both very useful add-ons, but seem to be hard to come by these days.

Disconnecting the speaker wire from the logic board would be the simplest route. It's on it's own next to the airport slot Diagram is on page 14 (15th page of the online document, including the front cover).

@Newsense - nice setup, is the external drive USB, or Firewire?

What is needed is the StartupPrefs to be programmed for the MacMini for use on MorphOS then I wouldn't need to have to do all this messing about via the Mac OS X, but hey, it works OK for me, as I also use the Mac OS X on the odd occasion.

There were other MiniMac HDD enclosures made, one by Micronet called the MiniMate, Lindy made two, one is just a HDD USB accessed enclosure, and the other LINDY USB 2.0 HDD enclosure for the Mini but which has NAS (Network/Ethernet accessibility) these enclosures are for 3.5" HDDs both SATA & IDE Drives.

There was another USB hub designed for the MacMini by Plasticsmith which was called the Mac Mini Shack, but I believe PlasticSmith are no longer trading.

Same here. I am using my Mac Systems with startup panel in silent mode.

The easiest way to do that is if you have OSX installed. If not, you need at least a Firewire cable and an external FW drive or another Mac to remote boot an installation from that device and silence the system using the tool.

Please note, that due some accident it can always happen that the sound returns, so you may need to redo the procedure somewhere in the future again.

You don't have that annoying starupsound anymore, but normal audio is heard from MorphOS. For me it's never come back again with several machines.

But if you want to use OSX occasionally, then that pref program is needed, because OSX resets the mute setting in boot always.

I know these two methods, but it certainly would be nice to have MorphOS app to do that. Not everyone knows or remembers to disable that sound from (usually) default OSX installation before going for MorphOS.
