Painful GFX experience

    I'm back tinkering with a PowerMac Quicksilver 800mhz and Radeon 7500 GFX card. So far it is a bit painful with simple tasks such as resizing windows eating up full CPU load. A search here says there is a known issue with DMA? Is it just with the 7500? There was a mention of a workaround?

    On a 7500 you should really disabled "enhanced display" and double/tripple-buffering.

    The DMA-issues only set in when you have other cards installed (AFAIK) the SBLive being one of the worst offenders but that would render the system 100% unuseable starting with extremly long booting time (as witness by myself when I paired an SBLive with a Radeon9250-PCI in my Quicksilver).

    You should try to disable enhanced display first. If that doesnt change anything related to speed, it might be another problem.

    pega-1,

    Yeah, I tried that already (enhanced display, double/tripple buffer disable). I opened TaskManager and when resizing windows Workbench takes nearly 100% cpu load. Sitting idle with only Task Manager open cpu load bouncing around but goes as high as 28% or so just sitting idle (with Task Manager).

    I bought a Radeon 9600 Pro from a G5. Would it improve anything? I know it would be 2D only at this point. I also know I have to do a mod to make it work in the Quicksilver.

    Kronos,

    No SBLive, nothing else but a stock Quicksilver with Radeon 7500.

    Here is the CPU load sitting idle with only task manager opened and enlarged.

    For the G5-card to work you would have to atleast cut/isolate the 2 traces that apple missused for ADC in the G4 AGP-slot (pretty much the same as converting an x86-card just minus the reflash).

    A 7500 in a barebones should still be useable (just not funny) so there might be something odd with your system....

    @Kronos

    Come to think of it, the first time I booted after installing MOS I got an odd error message. I didn't think much of it as I never got the error again after that. Maybe something went cross-eyed with the install. When I get home I will reinstall MOS. If I get the error again I'll take a pic.

    If it was something like "console failed", don't worry had that too...

    I'm not sure you can use the original ATI Radeon 9600 Pro/XT "Apple" from PowerMac G5 in PowerMac G4; if I remember correctly It's different the connector of the AGP card itself.
    No problem if you use a 9xxx PC card flashed for Mac in PowerMac G4 (cut/isolate the 2 traces http://themacelite.wikidot.com/pins-3-and-11) and in PowerMac G5.

    I reinstalled MorphOS from scratch. No error message this time but have the same issue.

    Is there anything I can do to send feedback to MOS developers? I already sent a bug report but didn't hear anything. If there are known issues so be it, but I can do some testing if needed.
