How to Change Screen Mode?

How exactly do I go about changing the screen mode to 800x600? I have went in and changed everything, but when I test it, the screen moves to the upper right hand corner just as most Amiga games do when played in full screen.

When I reboot, the screen is scrambled and nothing shows up as it should.

The reason I am trying to do this is because I'd like to try to play Wolfenstein and Quake 3 in a lower resolution to see if that speeds things up a bit, also I'd like to cut back on the graphics RAM a bit as well.

    I'm on an eMac btw.

P.S. I REALLY miss the classic Amiga Prefs folder!

Your ScreenMode resolution has nothing to do with the resolution you are running Quake. As far as I can remember -there is a long time passed since the last time I tried the three Quakes on MorphOS- you are able to change the screen resolution of the game(s) from the loader or from the in-game options. Correct me if I am wrong in here.

I change my screenmodes also in quake itself. I never change anything in Ambient's screenmodes if I want to change a game's screenmode.

In quake 3 you choose "options" ingame and there you can change your preferences to less detailed ones.

I'd say that you don't have smaller screen modes defined in Monitor prefs.

Btw, you can have a 'classic' prefs folder, you just have to build it yourself. Hint: you can launch Preferences with a prefs class name in a parameter (like MOSSYS:Prefs/Preferences MOSSYS:Prefs/MPrefs/Audio.mprefs)

The easiest way to build a 'classic' prefs folder is to do something like:

    cd sys:prefs
    copy Preferences.info Audio.info
    copy Preferences.info Blanker.info
    [...]

Damn easy and works since day 1, many many years ago :)

I went under the Monitor Prefs and created an 800x600 mode, but as I was saying it drew the screen in the upper left hand corner of the screen, then when I rebooted (having set MorphOS to this mode) my screen was scrambled all together, so I'd wager a guess that this would not work in game either.

I'm on an eMac btw, maybe the monitor just sucks?

As for having a Prefs folder. That ain't going to cut it. I would also need all the individual prefs like I have on my classic Amiga for the full effect.

Anyhow, not trying to bitch here, I really like what the MorphOS team is doing, but little things like this get under my skin. It seems that Windows is about the only OS out there where you can simply change a screen mode in or out of a game and it just works and it actually fills up the whole screen instead of just part of it or what have you, but...

I HATE windows! So no go there. ;)

You can always test a mode before saving. Perhaps it needs a little tweaking or this CRT really can't display it - you'll have to figure it out.

Preferences do have an 'individual' mode. Try henes' suggestion or just run the command I pasted in the post above and you'll see what I mean.

I wouldn't advice to set any mode in use before you have got it working in test mode first. It's just like on real Amiga with cgxmode or p96mode etc. RTG is a bit different than video modes, if you have only used those in the past. You have to find correct frequencies etc for each monitor, they all support a bit different things and it isn't sure that premade modes will work.

So, open Preferences/Monitors and start creating/editing the needed modes. Try first with presets and if they don't work, tune for example the pixel clock to get frequencies into monitor limits.

You have the SYS:Prefs drawer, just like on real Amiga, and you can find any 3rd party prefs there. You can also copy MorphOS's internal prefs there with the way Henes told you.

I don't think Windows has it good at all. How many times you have got your icons messed when some other program changes the screen mode etc. The beauty on Amiga and MorphOS is the individual screens and freedom to make and use any kinds of modes, with Windows you're pretty limited to certain offered modes.

Hey guess what? You guys know what your talking about! ;)

I FINALLY got things worked out, though not without a few more difficulties.

I went into my Monitor Prefs and tried to create a new screen mode, which was 640x480. I had to tinker with the Pixel Clock bar a bit, but I finally got the screen to fit within the boarders, but...

...not perfectly as could be accomplished on a classic Amiga with the OverScan Prefs, but close.

Now the strange thing is that after I tested and saved this, ALL of my other screen modes vanished!!!!

I don't have the internet at home so I just re-installed MorphOS to my System partition to resolve this issue rather than wait till today to ask you guys how to fix this by hand.

Since then I went in and edited one of my existing screen modes and for what ever reason, had much better luck getting the screen to center better. It ain't perfect, but it is close enough. Again I tested and saved, and all works well.

I have some more experiments I need to perform in relation to games, and am also curious as to why I can't create a new screen mode without the others vanishing, but I won't be home to experiment with that further until tomorrow.

In the mean time, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all your time and patience!!! :)

Oh, and btw, my Prefs folder looks as close to this as it possibly can now! Aghh, nostalgia. ;)
