    Hello,
    this week in my little spare time I'll try to replace the very noisy PSU of my PowerMac G4 with a standard ATX power supply.
    After googling around it seems that all I have to do is to verify to match voltage of the old one and then connect the wires to the Apple connector matching the same colors...
    Do you have any other advice about this subject?
    Thanx in advance for any tips.

    I still have an 1.25 GHZ MDD with a broken PSU overhere... you sell yours ? If you want, I send you the connectors of mine so you don't have to touch your working psu.

    Connecting a std ATX PSU is quite easy - the colors match the voltages and the only one incompatible voltage is optional. Get a 20-24pin ATX adapter and just reorder the pins - you will also need some pins from the P4 connector of your ATX psu.

    Some photos of the CPU replacement operation I did in my MDD are here: http://dreamolers.binaryriot.org/mdd/ . And yes, the windtunnel might be lame, but you really need something like this. This is the only spot where the ATX psu will fit and you don't want it to blow the hot air right inside the thing - the whole case will get HOT.

    @all
    thanx for suggestions, for now I've disconnected the PSU and detached the cables from the case(damn Apple,it's really triky to disassemble this monster, but it's also very funny:-)). During the week I'll try to replace the connector and solder the cables.
    @Oepabakkes
    yes, my PSU is functional but, as said, is as noisy as a Tupolev. :-)
    Why don't you simply try to replace it with a standard PSU? I think that sending via express courier my PSU will cost too much money than buying a new one...

    There is no need to solder anything, really. Use the 20-24 pin adaptor, remove the pins on the 24pin end and reorder them - took me about 40 minutes.

    And double, no triple check your wiring. If you make a mistake it could be fatal.

    I kind of like the standard gear. About being noisy ... surely the fan can be swapped for a less noisier one ? And what can transport cost ? 20€ ?

    You can swap the fans but it won't help much - I've tried that before doing all the mods I did.

    Hola jaca.
    As suggested by you today I've bought the 20-24 pin adapter for not to have to solder wires.
    But I'm also very concerned about this because i'd not like to fry my dear powermac so I was also evaluating to change only the fans of the original PSU but it seems you have already try this without success...
    So I'm back to original plan and in next days when I'll find some spare time I'll try the trick. Thanx again to all!

    Just have a little patient and let me find some time to try the hack and let my PM power up with the new PSU and then I'll contact you to sort something with my old power supply.
    Hola

    Hola, I'm back with my mac (yes I've not melted it!) :-)
    During these days I've evaluated options for not to change my original PSU (really, I was very worry to fry my mobo) and after a little resarch in some computer shops I've found two nice fans for the original PSU of my PowerMac and so I've decided to carefully disassemble the machine and I've replaced the original fans with 2 super silent ones. I've also changed the big fan near the CPU and now I've a super silent PowerMac, I've to look at the power led to see if it's running! 8-)
    Sorry Oepabakkes!
    Now I'm very very happy with my powermac! It's fast, silent and USB 2.0(and most of all doesn't cost me 1000 eur like new Sams...) :-D
    Again thanx to all the thread for your precious suggestions.

    That is good news maurensen! Can you please post all the brand names, model#'s, location where you bought them, and how much the fans cost, so that the rest of us can check to see if we want to follow your example?

    I have not been running my G4 PowerMac for the past month, or more and I know that I would be more likely to use it if it were not so noisy.

    Again, congrats on solving your noise problem and choosing MorphOS2.7 on the G4 PowerMac, instead of the other alternatives (some of which cost well in excess of $1,000).

    C'est la vie ... I think I better scrap an old Pentium4 and use that PSU to revive the MDD I have here. MDD powersupplies are way to expensive to my taste second hand.

    The silent PSU fans cost me 12 euros in total and I bought them in a little computer store here near my home. Unfortunatley they are totally unbranded and all I know is that when I show the old ones to the shop he thought it was a CPU fan... The new fans are identical to the older exect for the 3 wires connector. I simply cutted the wires and attached the old mac connector, you can safely cut the 3rd wire.
    Then I've replaced the big noisy fan near the processor with a little one stolen from an old pentium CPU. It's halt the size of the original one but the airflow produced seems enough for my single 1.25 CPU.
    So 19 euros for the USB2 card, & 12 euros for the fans seems a good deal to me!
    That's all folks! :-)
