I need a portable anyway, do not want to buy a new one because I just want to use it for office use. That and the fact that rather sooner then later MorphOS will run on a powerbook, I am considering to buy a powerbook.

I stumbled to an ad with a powerbook with the below specs:

    15 inch PowerBook G4 1.67Ghz,
    768MB Ram,
    80GB HD (5400RPM)
    resolution 1440 x 990 pixels.
Dual Layer Superdrive, ATI Mobility 9700 with 128 Ram.
    1 FireWire 400 en 1 FireWire 800 port, 2 USB 2 porten, Gigabit
    ethernetport,Airport, bleutooth, pcmcia port ...

It seems to be in excellent shape, what is a fair price for such a thing in Western Europe ? 300euro ?

If it's in real good condition 300Euro is a good price.

I heard that some Powerbooks (most of all the 1,67Ghz versions) can have video iussues, check about that. Maybe other people here can give better infos about this.

Just so you guys are aware the whole aluminum powerbook g4 line is prone to problems... RAM slot issues, screen problems, trackpad, etc etc

I just had to sell my 1.25ghz pbook because the ram slots are broken and only 256mb shows no matter what. also the trackpad button was broken.. no big deal cuz you can use the touchpad though.. oh i also had the slight white spots on the screen

as you can see from wikipedia entry to back up my story. Also, there are many forums about this... so make sure you test the mac when you buy it!

doesn't sound like a great piece of hardware if I see what happened to yours...it's seeding some doubts in my mind. 300€ is not awfull lot of money, but it is when I end up with a powerbook that needs costly repairs in a few months. I am not the guy that takes his portable everywhere with him so it will not be bashed all the time.

The seller is a semi-pro Apple vendor. He already states in his ad that there are no dead or lazy(?) pixels, battery lasts more as one hour, all in excellent condition ...

From Belgium it is a good idea to go to the "Apple dag" in De Bilt (near Utrecht, the Netherlands). There are many dealers with used Apple hardware, and it is always possible to buy there a "new" computer for much less than on eBay or marktplaats. The next Apple dag is on Dec., 18th. For further information look at http://www.klokhuis.nl .

My pb 1.67 bought at 450 euros (in really mint conditions) has the infamous display problem after some months... Lukily I've been able to sell it at 150 euros to someone using it attached to a monitor.

I AM referring to Powerbook 15"

    from wikipedia:

    Quote:

    Quality issues

Some owners have experienced failure of the lower memory slot, with the typical repair being the replacement of the logic board. Apple had started a Repair Extension Program concerning the issue,[3] but it has been noted that some models displaying the issue have not been included. This leaves certain PowerBook G4 owners with only a maximum of 1 GB of RAM to use instead of a full 2 GB, unless they wish to purchase a 2 GB stick to put in the working slot.

Apple previously had a Repair Extension Program to fix the "white spot" issue on its 15" PowerBook displays.[4]

There has also been a rash of reports concerning sudden and pervasive sleeping of 1.5 and 1.67GHz models known as Narcoleptic Aluminum Powerbook Syndrome.[5][6] Symptoms include the PowerBook suddenly entering sleep mode, no matter what the battery level is or if it is plugged in. One cause is the ambient light sensing, and associated instruction set coding, with possible keyboard backlight and sleep light issues accompanying the so-called "narcolepsy". Another cause is the trackpad heat sensor monitoring the trackpad; system logs report "Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.".[citation needed]

To correct this, service groups will often replace the logic board or power converter, but the actual fix (depending on the model) for the first cause is to replace or remove the left or right ambient light sensors; and for the second cause, disconnect, remove, or replace the heat sensor, or the entire top case which holds the trackpad heat sensor. Alternatively, there are reports which detail success in removing certain sensor kernel extensions or rebuilding the kernel using the Darwin Open Source project after commenting out the relevant sleepSystem() call; though permanent solution of the sleep issue in this manner is little documented.[7]

The 1.67GHz model may suffer from manufacturing or design defects in its display. Initial reports pointed to this only being a problem with type M9689 17" PowerBooks introduced in Q2 2005, but then this problem was also seen in displays replaced by Apple Service Providers in this period (e.g. because of the bright spots issue). The devices were the last 17" models shipped with the matte 1440×900 pixel low resolution display. After many months of usage, the displays may show permanently shining lines of various colors stretching vertically across the LCD. Often this will start with 1-pixel wide vertical lines being "stuck" in an "always-on" mode. Various sites have been set up documenting this issue.[8][9] and a campaign seeks to get Apple to acknowledge that a defect exists. Posts regarding this in Apple forums have been heavily censored. No official word from Apple on the issue.

mine was the 15" at 1.65ghz.
It was in perfect condition but the display problem seems related to the open/close of the monitor
