Sure? I remember ADPro having a function to count colours... And also another to reduce colour use, applying dithering (with a great Floyd-Steinberg algorythm). That way we were able to have good looking 32 colour images, out of 24 bit pictures... Or course, the original images didn't use those 16 million colors at all, only a few hundred. I was also told that the human eye can only tell about four million colours.
Of course, applying JPEG compression afterwards would totally destroy dithering, so another, non destructive compression should be used. Good old (and lame) "CmpByteRun1" (RLE), as ILBM has, should work, but I don't know if it accepts 16 bit images.
Does PNG have any non-destructive compression algorythm? Or a "100%" quality setting for JPEG? All in all...
