I am not really interested in the cpu power... but is 32Mb videoram going to be a problem ?

Should I really buy the 1.5Ghz with 64Mb Vram ?

It all depends on usage. I use a monitor which is full 1080p and multiple screens so of course this requires more vram so I have the 64mb version. If you're not worried about cpu power and you think 32mb will be enough for your usage then the 1.25ghz version is the best buy. And I'm not just saying that because I've got three to sell ;-)
Otherwise the 1.5ghz with 64mb vram is the only choice. Often 1.42ghz models seem to fetch almost as much whilst offering a lot less imho.

Well I'd say that depends on both your budget and the actual difference in price.

    Remember:

Saving a few Euro now might be something to regret for years to come.
Getting the 1.5GHz Mini means you get one of the latest, lesser used and fully debugged units (dunno wethere there were any major changes to the mobo, but the latest is the latest ).

    Just a notice:
Using multiple screens is not a real problem. If you run out of video memory then cycling screens will be slower because bitmaps will need to be swapped in and out. But this will not prevent you from opening more screens. And having other screens in the background will not slowdown operations on the frontmost screen.
i.e. Quake3 will run at the same speed no matter how many screens you keep behind its own.

Slower? That is not something I can tolerate, I must have speed at all times :-p

Then you need as much video memory as normal memory. i.e. 512MB or 1GB :)

I just got a 1.25ghz mini w/ 512mb ram and 32mb video. Morphos really flies on this thing!. I running a pretty standard screenmode and doing basic sufing and music apps though.

I could imaging that if you were doing video/graphic intensive stuff you would want the 64mb of video ram.

I have both a 32 and a 64 now and I cant see much of a diff on them. I would get a 1.25 if the price is good and you cant find a 64. It is way better then an efika in any case no matter which you get.

    Hi all,

what performance boost you see from a 512Mb -> 1 GB Mac mini RAM extension?

I plan to buy a Mini (1.5Ghz/64 MB VRAM) with 512 MB RAM and just wondering on expanding its RAM just after having bought it.

    thanks,
    Cheers

none in terms of speed, but it will allow you to run more programs, in principal, I never ran out memory with 512MB, so I didn't need to update my mac Minis, but I had the memory chip spare so I did. it's quite easy fitting it. Opening and shutting the case is the tricky bit.

MacOS tiger/Leopard needs more than 512mb IMHO.

Also, I find the fan makes more noise and spins up faster on heavy load on the 1.5Ghz, which it didn't on the 1.42 model. On both MorphOS and MacOS.

I don't read French, but it appears that the speed of the G4 for that MacMini is listed as 1.49GHz in one place and 1.33GHz in another. The sellers in eBay auctions have often put the wrong numbers for CPU speeds and for the amount of RAM and VRAM installed, so I would not let one or two auctions convince you that any of the 1.33GHz models have 64mb VRAM installed, until you actually have one in your hands, or see a reliable screen shot which shows a 1.33GHz model to have the 64mb of VRAM installed in it.

    Hi amigadave,

the 1.49 you seen is for search: "1.00 ? 1.49GHz" meens speed between 1.00 and 1.49GHz.
I agree some users don't know what they have but not all (if graphic ram is specified, i think the vendor knows what he sells).

Guys, this is amazing. Just installed MorphOS on a 1.5 Ghz mini. After several years of journey this is feeling like: you just arrived home. :)
