    Here is my first post from my new Efika system under MorphOs 2.2 and OWB.

    Both OWB and Sputnik runs very fats @ Efika / MorphOS 2.2

    I am very happy to own another piece of hardware running MorphOS!

    Now I am on my way for a Peg1 and a MacMini.

    AusPPC have done a great job having my Efika delivered on a perfect case with MorphOs 2.1, MorphOs 2.2 and Gentoo Linux installed!

    Anyone looking for an Efika should check his blog out.

    That is all for now!!! You can post your wishes!!!

    How well does Gentoo GNU Linux run on your Efika?

    @Amigadave:

    Gentoo is quite stable. It takes some minutes for it to boot. Enlightenment -its desktop environment- looks cool. I still have to set up the Internet connection. Will post some screen shots sooner or later.

    Really? I find that surprising that someone on this website would not be running MorphOS2.2 on their Efika, but then you probably have another better machine to run MorphOS on, like a Pegasos2 maybe. Why do you prefer CRUX PPC2.5 over other Linux distros?

    Thanks for the tip on a good Linux to run on the Efika. I have this huge (by Amiga/Morph standards anyway) 60gb hard drive that came from my dead 1GHz G4 PowerBook installed in my Efika and partitioned, just waiting for me to install some flavor of Linux on it to do some things that MorphOS does not have software to do yet.

    I am guessing that even though the Efika will run a small & lean version of Linux, it may still not be able to run some of the Linux applications that I would like to run, due to the low amount of RAM available on the Efika. Applications like Firefox3 to browse where AWeb/IBrowse2.4/OWB fear to tread, and OpenOffice3 to work on files that need to be exported to someone in the MS Windows Office world.

    Can you run either of those two applications from CRUX PPC2.5 on your Efika?

    Hi Amigadave,

    I tried crux + X, it suxx. Slow as hell. Not enough RAM and too much swap. This is not the fault of crux but X + graphical env overhead (used some very light WM).

    It seems Qt from trolltech gives better result for graphical use. There is some video on youtube IIRC.

    Efika + Linux is good for console anyway... I tried to run OO, FF and some other hungry apps and it is not usable unless you can wait two or three seconds between a keystroke or a mouse move for the refresh. - ( a bit exagerated but you feel the idea : the gui is like glue). Swap kills the baby.

    For example, a simple mouse move over an empty FF window eats 50% cpu.

    For CRUX : damn good distro. Slim and fast. You must compile your kernel to install it, you have to edit tons of file before running but it gives good results. The package management is done with simple text file and are compiled as well before installation. CRUX is a source based distro !

    Definitly not for beginners.

    And MorphOS flies on the Efika... but you can feel the ram limits too. OWB can explode at any time if you hit the ram limits. Sad. There is only one escape to this pitfall : swap (or add memory allocation fail check to every malloc in OWB source tree :))

    @amigadave

    eh eh, that's right i'm going to install MOS on my Peg1 with a good amount of ram.

    As Thecko said i don't use Efika like a desktop replacement system but only as silent and energy saver NAS (with a pci/usb2 adaptor), torrent client and cups server.

    I saw some multimedia use of Efika+CRUXPPC but, at my Efika experience, i think they are not realistic to use everyday...

    In computer contexts, NAS usually means Network Attached Storage (but can also mean a few more things). Think of it as a disk storage that you can access from all your computers in your local LAN.
