The only slight problem is that the touchpad is so twitchy that I hardly dare touch it - if I even go near it it presses the mouse button. I gues I`ll use a usb mouse instead unless there`s a fix...

edit: Oh, and I haven`t managed to get (wired) networking working yet, it just complains about needing version 0 of bsdsocket library.

Glad it finally works now for you. I guess some ppl have sweated with you here... Care to tell us which issue was the actual show stopper?
Enjoy the ride (and to tell you something promising: the positive feeling will probably persist, at least I am not bored by my MorphOS machines yet).

That one is nice to get an idea what is available, but it also installs many stuff which may cause trouble later on, as you don´ t know it is there interacting.

Better to go for Grunch: http://grunch.geit.de

It provides most stuff available and installs/deinstalls it properly.

I used the burn app recommended by itix and then it booted from cd just fine.

I installed pack ultyimate then used grunch to mupodate everything.

Sorry I`m a little drumkl now but I`ll give some details later.

    Thanks all again xx

    @Fraggle

You may want to adjust sensitivity in Touchpad system settings if the tp is too twitchy for you.

As a complement to the Mac burning option mentioned above, a free and good image burning proggy for the Windows environment is ImgBurn:

i'm returning to MorphOS in a few days too. i bought a powerbook 5,8 with 2GB of Ram at the price of 120 euros. it was just too attractive. so after 2 years i'll give morphos a try again.

is there an easy way to install it as a second system with Mac OS X preinstalled?

This should be the same for PowerBooks.

i have set up morphos and mac os x 10.5.8 on my powerbook and both are happy together i used this:-
    http://dreamolers.binaryriot.org/dualboot.pdf
but i had to set up the 3 partitions with mac os x and use morph ot set the 60mb partition as os x would not let me go below 1gb but apart from that was really easy to do.

After many months I finally found the time to burn and test a MorphOS 3.1 ISO on my PowerBook:
    Code:
    Apple PowerBook5,6 4.5.1f3 BootROM built on 07/13/05 at 12:26:00

It has 1GB RAM and a Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 (vendor 0x1002, device 0x4e50).

But it freezes shortly after booting the kernel:
    Code:
    0 > boot cd:,mac_ppc32\boot.img ramdebug loadsize=2939a4 adler32=e6a41af

    Loading ELF
    Quark/OpenFirmware
    console active
    System: <PowerBook5,6> Rev <>
    CPU0: <PPC7447A> Version 0x8003 Revision 0x102
    CPU0: CPUClock 1499999994 BUSClock 166402287

    Nothing happens hereafter...

    I thought PowerBook5,6 with 1.5GHz is supported?

It is not the CD. I just booted the same CD successfully on my Mac-Mini into the MorphOS installer.

Is there a known problem with 1.5GHz PowerBook 5,6?

1,5GHz? only 1,67GHz models are supported.

edit: according to this site, it should work http://www.morphos-team.net/hardware

Cego, It does state on the hardware compatibility page of morphos that the 1.5ghz will work.

"* * * - Only the two latest revisions clocked at 1.67GHz are supported at the moment, which includes the models PowerBook5,6 to 5,9, both 15'' and 17'' screens. The 1.5GHz PowerBook5,6 will also work but be careful not to confuse it with PowerBook5,4 which may have almost identical specifications."

Have you tried os x or ubuntu to see if they are fully working.

OS X was perfectly working when I got the PowerBook.
    Currently it is running NetBSD/macppc.
I have a free partition for MorphOS...

The powerbook should work out of the box.

All you need is inserting the cd, powerup, press and hold c right after the chime to boot it.

It is not required to enter any OF commands or perform other tricks. Just use the C key to force CD boot. Same can be done with the ALT key to get into the graphical boot selection.

Seems that it is not only not required to enter any OF commands, but also not supported.
I really had to reenable AutoStart in OF and use the 'C' key. Then it suddenly worked!
Strange, although the same OF command worked fine on the MacMini, and there is only this single boot.img for Macs.

Yes. Although there are some display-bugs showing up from time to time.
Like flashing pixels on the edges between two colors.
