I just installed a new dvdwriter in my Powermac Quiksilver 2002. It does get recognized and I can open it with the "software eject"

However, if I put a disc in it ... it doesn't read it. Strangely enough I can boot the MorphOS iso with it. SO it does seem to work.

it seems that also the original superdrive and also another NEC writer can't read discs while I am in MorphOS, even worse: the bar with the gadgets in ( eject, ram, etc ... ) seems to freeze.

This seemed to work fine before I upgraded to MorphOS 2.7 and Sonnet 1.8Ghz ... I'm not sure what is happening, al seems to work when I boot the MorphOS iso.

I guess it's time for a clean install unless I can send some log or whatever to some developer ?

when I boot with an audiodisc, it shows up in ambient. When I put an audiodisc in, after I booted ... it keeps saying "no media". No mather what drive I connect to the powermac. When I want to play the audiodisc, it says could not connect cdrom unit 0. And the player just freezes. It seems not to be a problem of the IDEport, because my zipdrive on the same cable just does what it is supposed to do.

So i tried some more things ...

-fresh 2.7 install ... same issue
-fresh 2.6 install ... same issue
-Connected the drive with an IDE to USB convertor ... works without problems

I also noticed that I had to try installing MorphOS multiple times because during install it just stops copying. I had this with different drives, different discs and different CPU, different IDE cable ..

I am beginning to think something is wrong with the IDE on my motherboard.
I could really need some help here.

If you boot the live cd, you can read the files on the MorphOS cd itself ?

I din't try that, but since I can install MorphOS from it ... I suppose that's rather obvious ?

I installed MACOSX and all seems to work fine there ... Anyway all worked fine before I had the Sonnet in there. Maybe the patch for the sonnet did something to the firmware MorphOS doesn't like... but that still doesn't explain why I can install it without problems.

I do not know if -after the patch on the firmware- you are able to boot the machine without the Sonnet. Perhaps you should try and see if everything works fine, without the Sonnet on the machine.

some other observation: when I do a cold start with the disc in, the disc shows up in Ambient and I can open/use it's contents. When I remove it and try to put it back ... no luck again.

I think that I registered a Powermac with a faulty motherboard. Today I have swapped the Sonnet 1.8 in a Powermac 3.4 (digital audio) and the problem is gone and this one runs without any errors and other strange crashes. I also noticed with this one, that when I enter the bootmenu (pressing ALT) while having a bootable iso in it this also shows up there. This was never the case with my quiksilver, so something is clearly wrong with.

SO do I now have officialy the first powermac with a registered copy of MorphOS ?

Send the faulty PowerMac mobo to one of the MorphOS Dev. Team members and ask for a transfer of your registration from the faulty mobo to your new and working digital audio PowerMac.

I hope that this fixes all your problems, as it does not seem that you have much patience left to deal with any more of them. Surprising, as I thought all the remaining Amiga users had "Unlimited" patience when working on their Amiga gear and software.

If you just "invested" +/- 370euro in a MorphOS capable machine, you just want it to work.
Anyway the Powermac 3.4 does a nice job compared to the Quicksilver, the later one sometimes froze and also playing a dvd wasn't fluid. But because I had a 1.2Ghz or faster in it I blamed it on the software and not on the IDE port malfunctioning.

I guess I have to ask the devs kindly to transfer my license and I can start having a MorphOS experience the way it is ment to be.

I guess that is the downside about the whole mac compatibility... it's aging hardware and you never know what happened with it the last 10 years when you buy second(?) hand.

Do you still have them with your original cpu in there ? In my case that didn't help. Also doing a reset on the motherboard after swapping hardware does seem to make some difference. In my case it's the motherboard that has the issues and boosting it with the Sonnet made the problems worse. If you have a bootable cd in your drive, does it show up in the early boot menu while pressing ALT ?

Anyway, the sonnet and the new dvddrive are working without problems in my Digital Audio, I only had to upgrade to the latest firmware before I could install the sonnet patch.

OK, I can get audio CDs to play via Mplayer, but not CDPlayer.
And all attempts to read DVDs result in a read error.
I'm going to try different drives to see if that affects the situation.

    Thanks for the assistanceOepabakkes.

Edit-alt? sequence does bring up a new menu system I've never seen before allowing video resolution chahges, erifying that the system sees CD0, and boting from CD. Neat .

But, no matter which DVD drive I try I get the same results. No DVD playback and audio files will only play via Mplayer.
