It seems that a usb 2.0 hd enclosure requires a double headed cable.
Needs TWO usb ports to work.
Just bought a case, borrowed a 500gb from my windows laptop, and found out the hard way.

I have an eSata 2.5" case that gets power from ONE usb port.
Any chance of a pcmcia eSata card?

I am using one usb port on the powerbook for my wirless mouse and can't really give that up.
I look like sphagetti central trying to hook up this usb case to both usb ports using a usb extender.

I am use to usb 3.0 drives that need only one port.

     :-(

Max amperage from an USB port : 500mA. That's roughly 2,5W of available power which is barrely enough to start spining a 2"5 drives, thus most selfpowered USB external HD enclosures use two usb ports giving a whooping 5W power to spin hard drives.

Get a 5V external powered USB hub. Having too much USB port can't be bad.

    I found a temporary fix:
Had a full sized ide enclosure and an ide->sata gender changer.
Popped the 500gb 2.5" drive in the big case which has its own power supply.
Wallah, one usb port, but stuck with a power cable.

I prefer as few cables as possible.
I run everything bluetooth and wireless normally on my main laptop.
    I hate wires.

For less cables, use a SSD disk, uses less power

I bought a Seagate Freeagent Goflex external 2.5 harddisk, it have a detachable sata cable, so i tried connecting a 120gb SSD disk to it and that worked fine.

    That is a great answer.
I'll give the SSD a whirl.
I happen to have one I can test out.

ok, just tried a samsung 256gb ssd in 2 different usb 2.0 cases using only a single head usb cable.
    no dice.
drive lights up but poseidon sees nothing.

I had really wanted the ssd trick to work.
    back to the drawing board.

I use a firewire disk. Works great and is pretty fast (about 15-26 MB/s).
Another benefit is that OS X can boot from Firewire. Hence my boot menu for MorphOS or OS X is the Firewire cable.

You need to download and install the (still) 3rd party Firewire stack "Helios" from Yomgui. On my Mac mini I have a few stability glitches with it (sometime it hangs), but on my Powerbook it works completely stable. http://www.morphos-files.net/find.php?find=Helios&utm_source=morphosteam&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=morphosfiles should be the mostcurrent version.

Yes. But the cables are a bit thicker and stiffer.

I also have an external firewire (LaCie Mini) that sits under the MacMini. I use it as a backup for the internal HD.There is an issue of a sustained connection with the SCSI device. It will be lost after a few minutes because of an input output error? I have backed up 10+ GB
with a hundred more to go. There is a thread on it at the site search firewire. Ebay has many listed under Lacie Mini 8-)

Hmmmm..... sort of like eSata cables are thick and annoying?
    :-D

    I noticed my powerbook has a 400 and a 800 port.
    So I would want the
Fire800 type of external case for my drives.

You can use the FW800 port, but according to the Helios author:

"Helios limits to S400 the max speed, as it doesn't support higher speeds configurations"

I need to use the 800 port becuase it powers drives.
Spped is not an issue, just not needing an external power supply.

I use Morph for anything and everything.

I am trying to establish a P2P drive that can be shared with both systems - morph and windows.
Currently it is working, just need to mount with ntfs3g to support writing as well as large files.

I have a youtube channel and would like to start using morph to edit and narrate my videos.
I own imagefx4 with ppc addons and I have blender installed.
Not sure if those will help.
    Never used ImageFX before.

Goal is to do everything I was doing in windows with morph.
Obviously gaming wont be part of that but , hey, windows is still good for something.

Bluray also doesnt seem to have a bright future with morph.
I rent blockbuster movies through the mail.
I use the PC to hande the blurays but would like morph to do it.

    1) p2p
    2) youtube channel
    3) blurays

Trying to get morph to take over all of this.
