    I've got a Dual 1.42 MDD, and a 1.5Ghz Macmini, I use the macmini more as it's

    a: Much quieter

b: The performance is good enough with MorphOS, with MacOSX the Dual processor PowerbookMac leaves it standing..

Naturally, the lack of 3D acceleration will be a very big issue for 3D games.

For this you don't need the "best MorphOS system" by far ;-)

    @Fairdinkem

"Power" is a matter of definition, IMHO. For me, expandiblity belongs to a powerful (main desktop) machine, too. The Mac mini and the Powerbook are powerful machines, without a question. For me, the EFIKA is a powerful machine, too, just a matter of expectations and purposes.

Is the lack of 3D acceleration a software thing (ie they have not ported all drivers yet) or is it a hardware (or the lack there of) issue?

It's a software issue. 3D support for Radeon R300 GPUs is supposed to come in a MorphOS release after 3.0, not necessarily 3.1 though.

So when this happens a powerbook could potentially blow the doors off a MDD?

Probably not. Once 3D support for R300 GPU has been implemented in MorphOS, you'll be able to use such a card for 3D also in an MDD PowerMac of course.

So is that your recommendation :-D

What R300 GPU's are available that would be compatible with a MDD Powermac?

    No, more like stephen_robinson's ;-)

    http://guides.macrumors.com/Radeon#R300_Core

So that would be Radeon 9700 (Pro) and 9800 (Pro/XT) cards for the PowerMac G4. The 96x0 (XT) cards from the PowerMac G5 will probably work in the MDDs too.

In the context of comparing a Macmini and a Powermac:-

Using MacOSX, the single processor and the limit of 1GB of Ram means the Macmini is a bit underpowered for Leopard.

I can easily recommend a re-flashed ATI 9800XT PC video card.
Mine was able to use the standard Mac rom file and operates at normal XT speeds.

Is this model going to be compatible or is only the 17" model compatible?

After AmigaDave showed morphOS at amiwest2011 and since I had the same laptop. I really wanted that option.

Because ver3 hasn't been release I borrowed my kids mac mini, but she wanted it back for I just found a mdd fw800 1.42 dp.

It was fun for one week, then the power supply died...

Now I say, these ten yr old systems too much trouble
any advice on BEST way to proceed?

The power supply on my FW800 went bad about a week after I received it.
That's not a problem limited to just these Powrmacs.
I've lost count of the number of PC power supplies I've replaced.

I was able to locate an ACBell replacement on Ebay fairly easily.
Either the 360 or the 400 watt power supply works fine.
    I haven't had a problem since.
And they're fairly easy to install (although slightly harder then the average PC power supply).

If I were you, I'd just replace the power supply. If you're not interested in doing that, I'd be willing to bet there's more then one person here that would be willing to buy the system from you.

I'll keep this in mind if the cost of this old system over runs my budget.

Well, one thing you're going to find is that FW800 power supplies are over priced, but I don't regret getting one (although I paid about half the going rate).

Well, I recd a refurbished power supply.
Just before MorphOS ver.3 was released. (sigh)

Everything seems to be working both under mac10.4 and NOW morph3.

I will finally get to use morph on my mac powerbook, which was my goal.
So the FW800 will sit for a while.
