Maybe your PMU needs a reset:

    Remove battery
    Remove PSU
    Press power-button for > 5 secs.

Are you sure you have PowerBook, not iBook charger?

PowerBook charger has bigger wattage due to bigger power consumption. With iBook charger, there won't be much extra to charge the battery with...

    -EDIT-
I think 65 watts should be for PowerBook...

Have two A1021 chargers 65 watt. Both operate the "5,8" and both only charge at a rate
    of 10 mAh...that,s slow?
There is a page on the net that is very comprehensive and shows what the powerbook consumes.
    http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/pb15_battery_life.html
    1. Chargers will check their outputs tonight with a multimeter
    2. Battery Plan to pick a new open box battery tonight
    3. Software Reset PMU, PRAM, firmware
    4. Open up the laptop and check the connections and see if any damage.
    5. DC sound board?
    6. Main Logi Board..

    anything I missed..okay prayer :-)

Batteries are an issue! Laptop is circa 2005 means batteries are 7 plus years old. if you get a used 5,8 be advised that a new battery is expensive and EBAY and the like will not be an avenue to take. Just bought a new battery that was DEAD. manufactured 2003?
    Cells die at 20% per year means battery 160% dead... :-o :-o :-o :-o :-o :-o

I now have five batteries :-D

and a new external charger :-) it it came in late yesterday :-)
The charger is now REALLY CHARGING THE BATTERY.
The Powerbook charges at 10amps the external rated at 3500amps.
It has been weeks of charging by the Powerbook to get it at 70%.
It appears that the batteries were not the problem but the charging circuit in the Powerbook.

    How to narrow it down?

Which charger did you use? any link?
Did the old battery is now working? How long did it stand?

I read (french) that on new macbook pro there's problem like that and they said that by unplugging the battery cable inside the Mac for a few seconds could resolve the problem.

    @osco,

What did you do to fix your charging problem, since you said that it was not the battery, or the charger that was the problem? Did you replace the DC power board inside the PowerBook?

If you want to sell one of the good batteries that you have (since you have 5 of them now), let me know, as I could use a spare for those times when I am traveling and it is inconvenient or impossible to plug in the A/C charger to charge the battery and/or run the PowerBook from the charger.

I am now calibrating 4 batteries 3 with cycle counts of zero and one with nineteen :-)

I haven't yet solved why the 5,8 is only allowing 9 amps to the battery?

But the four good batteries will allow the freedom to be away from an A/C outlet.

Osco, have you tried examining the performance of one of the new batteries under the same charging utility?

Also, did you notice if the bad battery charged more quickly if the powerbook was switched off during charging?

It is an EXTERNAL charger. There are no utilities. This charger and a battery A1078 are by themselves. The laptop does no charging. The PowerBook may need a new D/C sound board or even the logic board. The external charger works well and all batteries
    are fully charged. :-)

    Hi Osco,

I meant, have you tried the same utility which you posted in post #1 with one of the new batteries charging through the Powerbook (rather than the through the external charger).

Reason being that there may be nothing wrong with the charging circuitry of the Powerbook, the low charging current (10mA) could simply be due to the high internal resistance of the failing battery (from I=V/R) at lower capacities.

Would be interesting to know either way, I suspect for a new(er) battery you may get around 1600mA charging current (since Powerbook seems to operate around 45W) when the battery is drained.

btw - here's an article on calibrating the charge-state logic of the battery which may also be useful (at least in giving accurate 'power remaining' estimates) :o)

Of the five batteries ONE is bad and it resists charging by the external charger and will be disposed of but not before an autopsy. The net has yet to give answer to the low amperage heading to the battery. I hope its a software fix, then wiring, then DC board and finally the LOGIC board. last battery soon to be calibrated.

My thoughts are the Powerbook is for on reason or another is only allowing a TRICKLE charge of 9 mAh.

One of the steps in the quest to get the PowerBook 5,8 ready for Morph3.0:

    POWER ON THE ROAD

The Powerbook charging set up has had issues and many corrected by the Mac Pro.

    1. The Chargers capacity, 40/65 Watts, barrel connector wiring, barrel connector, internals of the charger (overheating) and the list goes on
    2. Batteries working time in real world 2 hours or so.
    3. DC board internally being jostled by someone tripping on the power adapter cord.

That being said, the PowerBook has a HISTORY now and many of the its problems have been addressed and corrected!

My 5,8 still has a trickle charge and I have not yet find the exact cause.
With 4 fully charged batteries, the PowerBook can spend the day away from the PLUG.
External charges work and a night of charging gets the four batteries ready for the next day

    One person's solution below :)

My immediate solution was to bypass the PowerBook's charging altogether!
    1.Purchase an external battery charger:
    http://www.brilliantstore.com/apple_laptop_battery_chargers_dekcell_al_3186.html
    2.Purchase 4 new batteries

That external battery charger can only charge one battery at a time.

What do you do, get up in the middle of the night to switch batteries, so all 4 of your PowerBook batteries are charged for the next day?

My sleep is jagged and if need be, we will opt for another external. Newer Technology has a pricy DUAL charger as well.

In the field, use would be from noon till 5pm and with 4 full young batteries there should plenty with reserves as well. :-P
Also will look at another WIFI set-up
