Hi Guys, I am having some freezing issues with my Pegasos-2 and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to help...

I had my Pegasos-2 in an Antec Aria desktop "cube" style case, and I have replaced the heatsink/fan with a rather heavy and long copper cooler with fan. It weighs enough that, along with some power cables, was causing the CPU card to tilt a little bit, so it wasn't 100% vertical.

I've heard from various people that if the CPU card is not 100% vertical you can have problems with the contacts.

So I moved my Peg-2 into a Tower case, so the motherboard is now vertical and not horizontal. So the CPU card is now sitting properly in the slot.

However, I am still getting some random freezes. I've checked and the new cooler is secure, fastened firmly with screws to the CPU card, making good contact with the CPU, and as I said, the CPU card appears to be 100% vertical.

I don't have those "Guides" to hold up the CPU card, I guess bplan didn't include them because they were hard to get or expensive.

So...has anyone else experienced random freezes (this is a total hardware freeze, not software problem) ?

I thought by putting my Pegasos-2 vertical so the CPU card would sit properly would help the issue, but I am still getting freezes sometimes. I can run for hours sometimes, and other times after several minutes I'll get the lockup/freeze...it's quite annoying.

Otherwise the motherboard looks in great condition, nothing leaking or no caps bursting... :(

Two yeas ago I had similar problem.
I solved it after I realized the cause was in my XQPack switch.
After replacing it I had no more freezing.

    Bye,

Well, I had that, and they continued getting worse until it sometimes wouldn't boot with memory error, then one day after stick the ram sticks in and out, something went pop, and the memory stick had burnt out bits, sent off to bplan who resoldered the northbridge, and I've not used that socket for memory as it's still a bit burnt, and since then it's been stable.

Dunno if that'll help you, have you tried testing the memory?

Memtest tests OK. however, seems to be stable now, we'll see.
I fiddled with the cpu card again, so let's see.

may take a few days or many hours before i know if it freezes.

I ran memtest for 100 iterations last night and it was fine...

If I ran the machine for a long time with memtest would that be ok? Or am I going to burn out the system.... ? I'm talking running memtest continuously for at least 24 hours....?

    Hammer

It is NOT recommended to put ANY stress on the cpu slot. I've seen a couple of cases of people with heavy heatsinks like this wreck the cpu slot...

If I were you I'd get some standoffs for the cpu ( I forgot what the spec is but its industry standard) if I remember I'll post back. I was looking into these for the ODW spec builds when I was with Genesi.. especially after a bunch of Peg2s were shipped to devs with the cpu cards instaleld that flopped all over the place in transit!
