Dual monitors on a Mac Pro? What about ADC?

    Hey Folks,

I just scored a free dual 800mhz Mac Pro. I want to run MorphOS 2.6 on it but had a quick question about monitors. It came with an unsupported nividia card so I've pulled that and have a Radeon 9000 on the way.

It came with a 22" Apple cinema display and I was wondering if MorphOS can use the ADC port on the 9000 to run this monitor?. Was also wondering if I added a second PCI card if I caould do a two monitor setup?

AFAIK, only single monitor is supported in MorphOS2.x. The 9000Pro card is capable of supporting dual monitors when running MacOSX and probably MacOS9 as well.

Well that's too bad. I guessing I wouldn't use it a lot anyway since this wont be my day to day machine. I've been spoiled with dual monitors on my Linux and Mac setups.

I guess I won't know about the ADC port until my card arrives and I try it. If not I'll just use the DVI port.

ADC Port at Radeon9000Pro and 17 Apple Studio Display working fine here with single 1,25ghz MDD and single mode :)

also both USB ports from Monitor through ADC are working...

If you add another gfx card (does not work with one agp and one pci, but only with 2 pci cards AFAIK) you can use it kind of. Not to extend the real estate of one screen, but to show two dedicated screens simultaneously. But you cannot move the mouse just to the other monitor, but need to use the depth gadget to switch to the other monitor. I used that kind of setup for ProStationAudio a few years back on my A1200PPC. For that app it was kind of handy.

Actually, moving mouse between monitors works since MorphOS 2.0. There are currently no settings for this though and the api is only ready for placing monitors relatively to each other in 8 directions, so nothing like dual monitor support of Windows or OSX.

That's very good news. I didn't know MorphOS already supported that (although it seems not to be finished, is good to know it's being taken into account).

Anyway, Amiga screens system, seems very adecuate for this porpouse. Application dragging between screens (I wouldn't mind about showing a screen in both screens while dragging, althougt it doesn't seem to be more than duplicate the window in both screens while transferring), and panel control options for this, and that would be a big step up for MorphOS (at least, I actually use two monitors for developing in the office... it's very handy)...

I only had dual graphics card setup in my Pegasos2 working for a limited time, very very long ago. If I get a PMac, I might look into this again.

The interesting thing to me is that the pegasos 2 of couldnt read 2 radeons at a time right? so going over to the pmac version of morphos how are the graphics cards read by the firmware??

The Pegasos OF just initialized the first graphics card it found, starting from PCI. Not sure how the PMac OF works here (like I said, no PMac).

The PowerMac OF actually initializes all cards found which contain an OF ROM.
The current MorphOS Radeon driver doesn't allow multiple instances, though. So you have to use 2 different cards. E.g. Rage128Pro and Radeon or Voodoo/Radeon.
The most reasonable solution would be to have multiple head support directly for a single (Radeon) card, obviously. This won't happen for 2.x, though but probably for some bigger updat e in the future.

Oh, pity. What about somehow separete instances of the same driver? Does that make any sense, in the broader way? Or saying it is, precisely, broadly stupid on my part?

Sure! Single output graphics cards are becoming rare (!) nowadays. Have you seen those FIVE output monstrosities ATi is making?

Thanks magna, That's good to know. I got a free 22" Cinema display with this machine and I was hoping to use it.

Waiting for my card to start installing MOS 2.6
