Severe Efika Booting problem.

    Okay, here goes:

I bought an efika from Ruud with 2.4 and a keyfile, as well as a suggestion to try the ultimate pack . Cool I thought.

I got it through the post, turned it on and after fiddling with the loose picopsu connection, got it to boot. At this point everything was fine.

I then remembered the ultimate pack, and thought, "yeah, let's give it a go". About half way through installing, System: is full. For some reason it was only about 260mb big out of an entire 4gb CF card.

So, I then thought "easy. I'll just reformat the CF and install morphos with a bigger System: partition this time." I run the installer from my USB thumb drive as the instructions say, repartitioned the drive, and began downloading the iso. then, suddenly, the half hour timer goes off, seemingly halting download too. I reboot, and try to start from the USB again.

    > Boot SCSI:0 morphos-2.4-efikainstall.img

Then it spits out an error about not being able to load or boot.

I check my spelling, and try again. same error.
I try a different USB disk. Same error.
I pulled the entire efika apart, put it back together, turned it on : Same error.

Has anyone seen anything like this? What did you do to fix it? Should I just throw it in the trash?

1st you should download the ISO with some other puter and put it on the stick (no need to run into the orginal time-out prob again).

Bout booting, well I remember having similar problems once and AFAIR I could solve it by replacing the "SCSI:0" bit with something else.

Not sure what it was, but your stick should be available in the OF under some other alias to (you might need to dig around a bit).

One might also try catching serial debug with another computer.

I already put the iso on the stick for when I rebooted after having the half hour run out.

The rest of your advice I can't really do anything with, I don't know how.

I'm having the same install issue you are. I get the same error. I messed around with this for three days, then kinda gave up on it for a bit. I mainly want this machine to use with SCANdal and Betascan for scanning in old pictures. Plus I miss having a working MorphOS box around.

One thing I did do though, and it might help, was to replace the CR2032 clock battery with a new one. The ones which came with the Efika had, IIRC, a rep for dying pretty quickly.

I'm watching this thread too :-)

OK. First of all try to determine if OF can see your USB stick at all. To do this try typing:

    Code:
    cd /builtin/usb

(or so) and then ls, and probably cd hub@1 or something similar (I cannot test it ATM, 'cause I'm in work). At some point you should be able to see the drive and list the partitions. That means you can boot off from the stick.

When giving the boot command you can replace scsi:0 with your path (e.g. boot /builtin/usb/hub@1/scsi@0 morphos-2.4-efikainstall.img) and see if it helps.

If it doesn't work, you could try downloading the efikainstall.img once again, then copying to the USB stick again and repeating the mentioned steps.

If that doesn't work, try with different stick (I've got a 128 Meg 1.1 stick that works every single time, and a 2 Gig 2.0 stick that is somewhat unpredictable).

And if that doesn't work, try network-booting :)

Looks like suggesting the ultimate pack wasn't my greatest move.
I only made the system partition 500MB as this is plenty for a normal MorphOS installation. Personally I keep all third party programmes on a separate partition. I forgot that the pack from meta-morphos is designed to go on the system partition...

None of my USB drives work with the efika. So I set up the CF card on my PegasosII. If you have another computer capable of reading FFS/SFS you could do the same.

If you can't get the efika setup again, you could take the CF card out and send it back to me. I could then copy the files to it that will make it a doddle to get MorphOS re-installed.

The battery has been replaced (more than once!).

It's no bother. The efika's a quirky piece of hardware, a lot of people have needed help when they've first got one. Hopefully koszer's advice will work out for you if not there is always plan B.
Hopefully once you've got it re-installed you can finally have some fun with it!

After digging around, I found the usb stick is at /builtin/usb/scsi/disk@0,0
I can get it to list the files, but getting it to load or boot the img is impossible. I've tried typing:

    boot /builtin/usb/scsi/disk@0,0/morphos-2.4-efikainstall.img
    boot /builtin/usb/scsi/disk@0,0 morphos-2.4-efikainstall.img
    boot morphos-2.4-efikainstall.img

and many, many other variations from both / and the usb directory itself. most I can get is for the little spinning slash/halfpipe progress indicator to go for a second rather than error instantly.

I've checked the md5 on the boot img, and it's not corrupt. I've also tried all the usb ports, and several usb sticks.

    Plan B it is then?

I think that's for the best. I'll post it tomorrow and put a couple of stamps inside with it too. Thanks for everything.

Edit: all you nee to do is put the boot img and iso on there, right? I'd prefer to have the CF split evenly between System: and Work:, but you'll know more than me.

Not at home to test it myself, but isn't there the need to specify the partition of a drive. i.e.
    boot /builtin/usb/scsi/disk@0,0:0 morphos-2.4-efikainstall.img

Is the command ls /builtin/usb/scsi/disk@0,0 successful?

Oh, one last thing Ruud - Do you want me to send the CF reader as well, or just the card?
