G3 and G4 booting differences?

    Hi,

    I have both a G3 and G4 Pegasos 2.

I used to use the G4 always with MorphOS and a while back I swapped the CPU card for the G3 so it was quieter (not that the G4 was that loud).

Anyway, the G4 works 100% on the other Pegasos 2 which has Debian Linux.

Today I went to put the G4 into the MorphOS machine and it won't boot, I can swap all hardware around, but only the G3 boots the harddisks which have MorphOS installed, but the G4 still works 100% in Linux.

Has me changing the CPU card from a G4 to a G3 card in the MorphOS machine somehow changed the boot blocks? To be more specific what the problem is, when the G4 card has the MorphOS harddisks attached, it cannot see ANY MorphOS harddisks in the open firmware, but the G3 can.

Why am I going through all this trouble? It's because Genesi decided to tie the MorphOS 2 registration to the motherboard and I want to keep my existing MorphOS machine working (ideally with the G4, but for for now it is stuck with a G3)... odd

    Any info appreciated... thanks.

The MorphOS development team made that decision. Genesi was not involved in any way.

i stand corrected... however, why is it i can no longer see my hdds with the G4 plugged in? I know the G4 cpu card works as it is working 100% with MorphOS 2.3.

Did you try rebooting after power up ? It's common that some drives take more to time to spin up than the OF does to init itself. Rebooting after the initial OF boot error helps there.

very strange, i now have 2 pegasos 2s setup with morphos:

    1 with a g4 and morphos 2.3
    1 with a g3 and morphos 1.4

I cannot make the g4 cpu card recognise the morphos 1.4 harddrives even at the open firmware level

You could try with a different PSU - perhaps the G4 is consuming more power than the G3, and your PSU is not quite managing to keep up?? Seems unlikely - compared to the power dissipatoin of the rest of the system, I would think that the difference between CPUs would be negligible.

    Weird...

Perhaps you could try swapping the drives from your G3 to your G4, rather than swapping out the CPU boards.

it shouldn't be the case because what i had was:

    g4 running linux on pegasos2 - system A
    g3 running morphos 1.4 on pegasos2 - system B

    but now it is:

    g4 running morphos 2.3 on pegasos2 - system A
    g3 running morphos 1.4 on pegasos2 - system B

but what i really want is:

    g3 running morphos 2.3 on pegasos2 - system A
    g4 running morphos 1.4 on pegasos2 - system B

    because I leave the g3 on 24/7...

just wondering... is there perhaps something in the FS that is G3 specific that makes them not visible in a G4?

Hmm... FS? is it just the FS/partitions that are not visible or is it the drive itself? Do both your pegs have the same firmware version?

I don't know if they have the same firmware, but both cards work in both machines - just not with the presently installed morphos HDDs - if i put in a different HDD and reinstall morphos, no problem - but that's a real pain.

Ok, then rewriting the RDB might be enough(?) (make a backup first)

Could you confirm if the drive is visible in the firmware? Nevermind the FS.

the drive is NOT visible in the firmware when the G4 is being used, that is the puzzling thing to me

Well.. with the G4 being faster it might just be that the drive doesn't spin up fast enough for the firmware to detect it.

    @zhulien

Try a different hard drive just to make sure you can get one to work at all...but definately weird. Maybe it is a spin up time problem..but there must be a way in open firmware to increase the wait time for ide spin up.

it is strange, both machines are working now 100% with morphos, one with 2.3 and one with 1.4 - the 2.3 machine 'was' running linux but not anymore. All i wanted to do was to swap the CPU cards around because I plan to keep 2.3 on 24/7 with the G3.
