Very slow screen redraws

    Hi,

I recently installed MorphOS 2.2 on my Pegasos II, but I have a problem with graphics. Initially after booting, graphics are fast and smooth, but after a few seconds of activity screen redraws become extremely slow. I can watch each GUI element peel on and off the screen. Does anyone know what might be causing this? My graphics card is a Radeon 9200SE with 128MB, which works fine in MorphOS 1.4.

MorphOS 2.2 made the 3d acceleration default for Radeons. It seems it nukes on your Radeon for some reason (if this happens the system falls back to CPU, which will be really really slow, just as you descibe).

You can disable the acceleration by using 2D boot option:
    Code:
    boot ...whatever... 2d

What version of the openfirmware do you have? If it's older than 1.1 you should upgrade. New firmware and install instructions:

    [EDIT]

Sorry for the confusion... 1.1 not 1.2 :-)

    [/EDIT]

Thanks, that improved matters, but it didn't completely fix the problem unfortunately. Now, graphics stay fast for longer, maybe two or three minutes, but they eventually get slow again. Not quite as slow as previously though, presumably because the CPU now only has to emulate 2D acceleration instead of 3D. Is there a non-accelerated option?

Check the openfirmware version (see the edited post from me), earlier than 1.1 had some gfxcard related issues.

Hmm, weird. That wouldn't happen to be a PCI Radeon would it?

No, it's a low-profile AGP card. This is an ODW box provided by Genesi, so there should be a good few other people with the same set-up. I'm therefore surprised that no one else has had similar problems. I did change the RAM recently, but I spent some time making sure that the system was still stable (in MOS 1.4). I presume if the RAM was the problem, it'd be more likely that the whole OS would fall over.

Indeed, I'd think more people would have this problem.

I'm at a loss here, but it sure does sound like the gfxcard falls over for some reason. I assume it works just fine for 3D under 1.4? No lockups or crashes after some time?

I had a similar problem when I went to 2.1; similar set up to you. All screen updates were very slow. I did a fresh install and it solved the problem. Can't say I recommend this option though.

I haven't installed 2.2 yet, so fingers crossed I won't have the same problem again.

I had similar issue with radeon driver crashing earlier using older firmware. I got some messages concerning that in debug log, maybe you should check what it says?

I have with 2.1 and 3d enabled the prob, that after a while the screen goes blank (i.e. monitor turns off). System's still running, buf gfx is >NIL:
    My system is a Peg1 w/ Club 3D AGP-Radeon 9250/128MB, MorphOS 1.4.5 is running stable.

I've got similar probs with my Radeon 9000. With the default Radeon driver from MorphOS 2.2, gfx refresh gets very slow, no matter if 3d layer is enabled or not. It really seems to be a OF issue. No problems with 1.4.5 though. My system is a Peg2 G3/600.

What's the easiest way to check 3D under 1.4? Also, how do I access the debug log?
